Goldenseal is one of the most widely used herbal medicines for infections of the gastro-intestinal and reproductive tracts, as well as sinuses and eyes. Despite such extensive use, little modern research has been done on its therapeutic efficacy. This monograph reports comprehensively on all of the available modern pharmacological and therapeutic research on and traditional uses of Goldenseal Root; in addition, it covers research done on berberine, one of the bioactive compounds found in Goldenseal. Information is also presented on the conservation status of this botanical, the extensive use of which has caused serious depletion of native populations.
