It is often necessary to calculate the sound pressure levels in rooms adjacent to mechanical equipment rooms that are associated with sound sources in the mechanical equipment room. The equation that has typically been used is the one that relates the difference in sound pressure levels between the two rooms to the transmission loss values of the wall separating the rooms, the surface area of the wall, and the sound absorption in the adjacent room. In many situations, the underlying assumptions associated with this equation are violated. In this paper, a new approximate procedure for the above calculations is proposed, which does not have the above limitations. Sound pressure levels in a room adjacent to a mechanical equipment room, calculated using the new procedure, agreed very well with measured values.
