Full Description

This article discusses tremendous opportunities for water supply and wastewater treatment authorities to contribute to long-term COsub2/sub emissions reductions through better water resource management. With theseopportunities also comes an enormousresponsibility to find a balanceamong energy efficiency, waterresource management, and COsub2/sub emissionreductions. This balance isunique to each municipal water providerand depends on numerous factors. This article examinesthree components of the water energylink: subregionalenergy generation; water resourceavailability; and, distribution systemupgrades and conservation programs.By using examples from threemunicipal water supply authorities(Chicago, Illinois; Arvada, Colorado; andJames City County, Virginia) with markedly different geographical and waterresource situations, variations in needand the potential for water conservationand COsub2/sub emission reduction is demonstrated. Includes 9 references, figures.
