Full Description

Coagulant choice is driven by a number of factors, including removal performance, chemical supply, andchemical cost. In most cases, the properties of theflocs that form downstream are given little consideration. This article presents floc structural data obtainedduring the coagulation of a water source rich in naturalorganic matter (NOM) under optimum conditionsfor a range of coagulant systems. The evaluationof floc structure includes traditional coagulants suchas ferric sulfate and alum. In addition, given therecent emphasis on improving NOM removal, flocsformed from more novel treatment options such aspolymers and ion exchange resin pretreatment wereinvestigated. The authors offer a rigorous comparisonof NOM flocs formed from different coagulants bymeasuring key structural parameters. This article provides water managers with important informationfor deciding which coagulant should be used duringthe treatment of waters containing high concentrationsof NOM. Includes 41 references, tables, figures.
