As part of AwwaRF #4024, the authors (together with 23 U.S. and 3 United Kingdom participatingutilities) have been investigating the relative performance of all methodsapproved for the detection of coliforms and E.coli in drinking water in both theU.S. and the United Kingdom. Initial investigations focussed on the sensitivity and specificityof the various methods using both "seeded" and naturally contaminated samples.Some extreme differences were noted very early on in the project. For example,in spiked sample trials, some of the approved media failed to recover almost allof the freeze dried bacteria added. For one of these media, similar results wereobserved with naturally contaminated samples, while for another media acompletely different pattern of bacterial recovery was noted. This indicated thatwhile accurately counted freeze dried bacteria are useful in determining thesensitivity of different culture media, care must be taken in interpreting results. Inexperiments using these "bioballs", the range of recovery of 15 different mediawas 0-95 positive samples. Includes tables.
