Seattle Public Utilities (SPU) has made a serious, comprehensive, and proactive commitment to addresssecurity. The utility has developed a master plan for security improvements, including capital and life cyclecosts, focusing on achieving results across all lines of business: water, wastewater, and solid waste. Theplan incorporates the utility's needs around accessing control systems, communications, security controlcenter, facility improvements, staffing, use of security services, security intelligence analysis, and employeesto ensure SPU successfully controls its risks.This presentation includes a discussion of how SPU structured the security master plan, established operatingand capital budgets and programs for security, achieved elected official and community participation, andimplemented new security policies, procedures, and training. Key aspects of the plan ensured successfulintegration with a City-wide emergency preparedness and response framework, providing a long-termstrategy for both the utility and the city.
